Dedication

The person to whom the 1973 PHOENIX is dedicated was named Outstanding Young Educator of the Year in Washington County in 1972 by the Abingdon Jaycees. During the twelve years she has taught at John S. Battle High School, she has stressed the importance of independent thinking and excellence in performance on the part of the student. With her help and encouragement, students are inspired to participate in forensics and creative writing contests. One year her students entered the state creative writing contest in Charlottesville and made a “clean sweep” of first place, winning the top honor in poetry, short story, and essay categories. Another example of her consistent effectiveness as a teacher is how well prepared her students arc for college English. Nearly all of them find English less difficult than any other subject they take in college.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Stetson University and did graduate work at East Tennessee State University and the University of Virginia. While teaching at Battle she has been advisor to the S.C.A., a coach for forensics and debate, and a consultant for the state creative writing contest. She is presently advisor to the National Honor Society, does home bound teaching, and serves on the state evaluation committee.

She is a leader of minds and a guide of the students, bringing new materials and methods of teach¬ ing to her classes, opening minds to new ideas and never losing sight of the purpose of English. Because of her loyalty and unceasing efforts, the PHOENIX staff proudly dedicates the 1973 PHOENIX to Miss Phyliss J. Ratliffe.

Senior C'lass Officers

The year of 1973 was exciting for the Seniors. Most students took part in a variety of activities which made the year most valuable. A Steering Committee was formed to plan various activities throughout the year, such as a senior dance, senior picnic, and a breakfast after the prom.

W.iO.P. I. sponsored a Senior of the Week Contest which gave honors to 10 seniors. They were Ike Anderson, Mike Bailey, Vonnie Edwards, Kathy Fraser, Carolyn Gallimore, Kathy Koch, Blaine Morris, Lyle Parker, Steve Robinson, and Jack Wagner.

As the t yeai continued, studemts began to look toward the future, deciding what careers might be available. Some chose colleges while others chose jobs. The highlights of the year were the prom, held at the \7F.W., and of course, graduation.

I ime quickly flew by and the year finally came to a close. We started realizing what it meant to be a senior. We were bout to say good-bye and realized that the year went by much too fast and parting was harder than expected. We realized we must face the world as young adults for the first time, and the thought didn’t sound as pleasant as before. The class was sponsored by Mrs. Lou Crabtree.

The class of 74 at Battle, sponsored by Mr. Jack Garland, met the challenges of Abingdon High School in the annual magazine sales drive by raising a total of $4,582.28. The class made over $1,800 profit which was used to present the graduating class of ’73 with a fantastic prom. Such enthusiasm was shown by the entire Junior class, under the leadership of Mark Draper, that no other fund raising activities were necessary. All salesmen were rewarded gener¬ ously with a number of prizes.

Although the first year in high school held an interesting beginning for the eighth graders, the students did not dismiss the importance of past years. The eighth graders, sponsored by Mrs. Collins, began their fixe year term at Battle by attending orientation to learn about the school. They compiled a histoix of all students, which included a listing of elementarv schools attended and gave any honors received in elementarx’ school.

The students demonstrated an interest in Battle’s athletics b\ decorating the lockers of the eighth grade football and basketball plaxers. They also proved their school spirit by xxinning the spirit stick at most of the pep rallies.

S.C.A.

This year through the Student Cooperative Association a good communication line was opened among stu ents, teachers, and administration. The overall atmosphere was relaxed, due to free and frequent discussions among the different school groups.

Also Mr. Farnsworth, as well as other members of the administration, was present at several S.C.A. scheduled meetings to hear the voice of the student body through their elected representatives.

The S.C.A., under the supervision of Mr. Donald Mashburn and Mr. Jim Butcher, managed the school store, sponsored clean-up week, assembly programs, took part in a mock election, worked to get a tape systern in the cafeteria, and worked to develop the merit system. S.C.A. members also found time to

attend the district S.C.A. meeting in Wytheville, and to attend the state S.C.A. meeting in the spring of 1973. ^ ^

Under the direction of Mrs. Lenora M. Smith and Mr. David P. Robinette, the 4-H Club of Washing¬ ton County had many projects and programs. There was a county council who planned programs and projects. The representatives from Battle to the county council were Susan Warren and Denise Frohling. In the summer of 1972, seven members from Washington County, Virginia spent a week in Washington County, Pennsylvania, staying with families of fellow 4-H’ers. In aceordance to plans, members visited states in the midwestern and southeastern United States. To go on these trips, members worked hard to earn money in such projects as pancake suppers and lunch sales. For entertainment, a dance and/or concert was planned for spring or summer.

At school meetings, 4-H ers have many projects. These include raising animals, care of farm equip¬ ment, wildlife, home economics, and ground beautification. At the meetings, members or leaders gave demonstrations in one of the areas mentioned above. Battle club members held a car wash which received active participation.

Drama

Varina Woodwood, an unexpected guest, created niucli conflict when she arrived at the Huff residence in the Christinas play.

The speech and drama classes presented a modern version of the Nativity using Rea¬ ders Theatre.

Theatre Arts at John S. Battle High school provided students with experi¬ ences in the total theatre process: act¬ ing, design, rehearsal, production, stagecrafts, and play attendance. The dramatic season began with a Christ¬ mas production entitled “A Christmas Potpourri ”. Presented b\ students of the speech and drama classes, the pro¬ gram consisted of a one-act comedy and Readers Theatre adaptation of A Child Is Born. Experience was gained in stage movement, dialogue, makeup, sound effects, and publicity.

In February twelve Juniors gathered to decide the fate of a young girl in the production of The Jury Room. The cast and technical crews for this three- act play were composed of students from all grade levels.

The speech and drama classes entered the Southwest District One-Act Play Fes¬ tival in March and presented the episodic play. An Overpraised Season. The classes also presented several one-act plays to English classes during the year. Students w ere given complete production respon- sibilit ies for these performance and were consequently able to apply their classroom study of drama. Throughout the year students enjoyed attending com¬ munity theatre and visiting the drama departments of several local colleges. Dramatics proved to be an interesting and a successful venture at John Battle during the 1972-’73 school year.

G.A.A.

The Girls Athletic Association had one of its finest years during the f972-’73 school session. A success¬ ful year began with the girls basketball team winning five games out of the season. During the holidays Christmas spirit was shown by G.A.A. members when articles of clothing, food, and presents were donated to a needy family through the Santa Pal organization. While the March of Dimes was having their yearly crusade against birth defects, members of the G.A.A. volunteered to help by selling peanuts in the Bristol area. The girls began practicing early for track to assure themselves a winning season.

Perhaps the most spectacular display of talent of G.A.A. members was the 1973 Gym Show' held in April. The show featured modern dancing, exercises on the rings, horse, and parallel bars, comedies on commercials, and tumbling. Miss Carmichel, Mrs. King, and Mrs. Robbins, and the girls produced a fantastic show.

Toward the end of the year, the G.A.A. held its annual banquet for its members. Awards, letters, and thanks were received by outstanding girl athletics and their leaders. The club advisor is Miss Julia Car¬ michel.

The Phoenix Staff has eapturecl some of the mom¬ ents that will be only mem¬ ories after this year. These memories are constant re¬ minders of our days at John S. Battle. This year s Phoe¬ nix is definitely a sign of 1973.

Vonnie Edwards Editor-iii-Cliief.

It takes an annual staff to make an annual. Any staff can produce an annual, but it takes outside interest as well to produce the “special” annual that every staff hopes for. This year through the special help, interest, and diligent cooperation of many different people, we feel that we have produced an annual with a novel approach. The 1973 Phoenix Staff wishes to sincerely thank everyone who worked with us so patiently. A very special thanks go to:

Miss Penny Vermillion for her endless patience, extra hours, and constant concern. Without her this 1973 Phoenix could not be possible.

Mrs. Janet Derting for the beautiful art work on the cover.

Mr. Jack Cross, the representative from American Yearbook Company, for guiding us in our planning.

Classic Studio for their quality work in processing our pictures and the many extra services they’ve given the staff.

Bristol Herald Courier for the sports pictures they contributed to the yearbook.
